MOHAN DAS KARAMCHAND GANDHI (1869-1948), मोहन दास करमचंद गांधी (1869-1948), popularly known as Bapu or the Father of the Nation, जिन्हें बापू या राष्ट्रपिता के नाम से जाना जाता है,was more a spiritual leader than a politician. एक राजनीतिज्ञ से ज़्यादा एक आध्यात्मिक नेता थे। He successfully used truth and non-violence as the chief weapons against the British rule in India and helped India gain independence. उन्होंने भारत में ब्रिटिश शासन के खिलाफ़ मुख्य हथियार के रूप में सत्य और अहिंसा का सफलतापूर्वक इस्तेमाल किया और भारत को आज़ादी दिलाने में मदद की।

Rome मिट गया Greece shared the same fate, ग्रीस का वही हश्र हुआ the might of the Pharaohs was broken, फराओ की शक्ति टूट गई Japan has become westernized; जापान पश्चिमी रंगों में रंग गया of China nothing can be said, चीन के संदर्भ में भी कुछ नहीं कहा जा सकता है but India still, somehow or other, sound at the foundation परंतु भारत हर हाल में अपनी नीव पर स्थित है. In the midst of all this, India remains immovable इन सबों के बीच भारत स्थिर बना रहा, and that is her glory. यह उसके लिए गर्व की बात है It is a charge against India भारत के विरुद्ध एक आरोप है that her people are so uncivilized कि उसके जनता इतने असभ्य, ignorant and stolid अज्ञानी और मंदबुद्धि है. that is not possible to induce them to adopt any changes. कि उन्हें परिवर्तन को अपनाने हेतु प्रेरित करना असंभव है। It is a charge really against our merit लेकिन वास्तव में यह आरोप हमारे गुणों के विरुद्ध हैं. Civilization is that mode of conduct सभ्यता आचरण का वह पैमाना है which points out to man the path of duty. जो मनुष्य को कर्तव्य का मार्ग दिखाता है Performances of duty and observance of morality are convertible terms. कर्तव्य पालन और नैतिक अवलोकन एक दूसरे में परिवर्तनीय है। To observe morality is to attain mastery over our minds अपने मन एवं विकार पर स्वामित्व प्राप्त करना ही नैतिक अवलोकन है and our passions. So doing, ऐसा करके we know ourselves. हम अपने आप को जानते हैं The Gujarati equivalent for civilization means ” good conduct”, गुजराती में सभ्यता का अर्थ “अच्छा आचरण है”।

If this definition be correct, यदि यह परिभाषा सही है। then India तो भारत को, as so many writers have shown, जैसा कि अनेक लेखकों ने दिखाया है has nothing to learn from anybody else, किसी से कुछ सीखने की जरूरत नहीं है। and this is as it should be. यह वैसी ही है जैसा इसे होना चाहिए।

We notice that the mind is restless bird, हम देखते हैं कि मन एक बेचैन पक्षी है the more it gets the more it wants इसे जितना अधिक मिलता है उतना ही अधिक पाना चाहता है, and still remains unsatisfied. और फिर भी असंतुष्ट रहता है The more we indulge in our passions, जितना अधिक हम विषय में लिप्त होते हैं the more unbridled they become वे उतने ही अधिक बेलगाम होते जा रहे हैं. It was not that we did not know how to invent machinery, ऐसा नहीं था कि हम मशीनों का आविष्कार करना नहीं जानते थे but our forefathers knew लेकिन हमारे पूर्वज इस बात को अच्छी तरह जानते थे कि that if we set our hearts after such things, यदि हमने ऐसा किया we would become slaves and lose our moral fibre. तो हम गुलाम हो जाएंगे और अपनी नैतिकता को खो देंगे. They further reasoned आगे उन लोगों ने विचार किया/ तर्क दिया कि that large cities were a snare and a useless encumbrance बड़े नगर बोझिल और एक बेकार जाल कि तरह थे, and that people would not be happy in them जिसमें लोग खुश नहीं रहेगें, that there would be gangs of thieves and robbers उसमें चोरों के समूह, लुटेरे, prostitution and vice flourishing in them वेश्याएँ एवं दुष्टता पूर्ण बुराइयों का बोलबाला तेजी से बढ़ेंगे, / पनपेंगी and that poor men would be robbed by rich men. गरीबों को धनी लोगों के द्वारा लुटा जाएगा They were, therefore, satisfied with small villages. इसीलिए वे लोग अपने छोटे-छोटे गांवों से संतुष्ट थे।

They saw that kings and their swards उन लोगों ने देखा कि राजा एवं उनके तलवार were inferior to the sward of ethics, नैतिकता कि तलवार से छोटी थी and they, therefore, held the sovereigns of the earth to be inferior to the ‘Rishis and Fakirs, और इसलिए, उन्होंने ऋषियों और फकीरो अधीन रहकर इस धरती पर शासन किया A nation with a constitution like this ऐसे संविधान से परिपूर्ण एक राष्ट्र, is fitter to teach others than to learn from दूसरों से सीखने के बजाय उन्हें शिक्षा देने / सिखाने में कुशल है. Moreover, these Vakil and Vaids did not rob people; फिर भी यह वकील और वैद्य जनता को लूटते नहीं थे they were considered people’s dependents, not their master. वह जनता पर निर्भर माने जाते थे वह जनता के सेवक थे मालिक नहीं। Justice was tolerably fair न्याय स्वीकार करने योग्य एवं पारदर्शी था. The ordinary rule was to avoid courts न्यायालय से दूर रहना साधारण नियम था There were no touts to lure people into them. लोगो को ठगने या उलझाने वाले दलाल या बिचौलिये नहीं होते थे evil too was noticeable only in and around capitals. यह बुराई भी केवल राजधानी एवं उसके आसपास देखी जाती थी। The common people lived independently सर्व साधारण स्वतंत्र रूप से रहते थे and followed their agricultural occupation एवं अपने कृषि कार्य में लगे रहते थे. They enjoyed true Home Rule. वह सच्चे घरेलू कानून/ स्वराज का आनंद लेते थे।

The Indian civilization भारतीय सभ्यता, as described by me जो मेरे द्वारा व्याख्या की गई है, has been so described by its votaries वैसे ही व्याख्या वे लोग ही करते हैं, जो उसने विश्वास करते हैं. In no part of the world विश्व के किसी भी हिस्से में नहीं, and under no civilization और किसी भी सभ्यता ने ऐसा नहीं है, have all men attained perfection लोगों ने पूर्णता को प्राप्त किया हो. The tendency of Indian civilizations is to elevate the moral being, नैतिकता को बढ़ावा देना भारतीय सभ्यता की प्रवृत्ति रही है that of the western civilization is to propagate immorality जबकि पश्चिम की मनोवृति और नैतिकता को बढ़ावा देना है. The latter is godless; दूसरा नास्तिक है the former is based on a belief in God. जबकि पहला ईश्वर की सत्ता में विश्वास रखता है So understanding and so believing इसी समझ और विश्वास के कारण, it behoves every lover of India to cling to the old Indian civilization भारत से प्रेम करने वाले प्रत्येक व्यक्ति का अपनी पुरानी भारतीय सभ्यता से ठीक उसी तरह जड़ना जरूरी है even as a child clings to the mother’s breast, जैसे एक बच्चा अपनी मां की छाती से चिपकता है।

I am not hater of the West मैं पश्चिम का विरोधी नहीं हूं. I am thankful to the west for many a thing I have learnt from Western literature मैं पश्चिमी सभ्यता का आभारी हूं क्योंकि पश्चिम के साहित्य से मैंने बहुत कुछ सीखा है. What is that modern civilization? आधुनिक सभ्यता क्या है It is the worship of the material, यह भौतिकता की पूजा है it is the worship of the brute in us-यह हमारे अंदर की पशुता की पूजा है it is unadulterated materialism यह अवयस्क वस्तुवाद है, a modern civilization is nothing आधुनिक सभ्यता कुछ नहीं है if it does not think at every step of the triumph of material civilization. यदि हर कदम भौतिक सभ्यता की बात ना सोचे तो आधुनिक सभ्यता कुछ नहीं है।

It is perhaps unnecessary शायद अनावश्यक है, if not useless यह बेकार नहीं है, to weigh the merits of the two civilizations दो सभ्यताओं की के गुण दोषों की तुलना करना. It is likely that यह वैसा ही है जैसे the West has evolved a civilization suited to our condition suited to its climate and surroundings पश्चिम ने वैसे ही सभ्यता विकसित की है जो उसके जलवायु और वातावरण के अनुकूल है and similarly, we have a civilization suited to our conditions, और उसी प्रकार समान रूप से हमारी सभ्यता हमारे परिवेश का अनुकूल है and both are good in their own respective spheres. और दोनों ही अपने परिवेश के अनुसार ठीक हैं।

The distinguishing characteristic of modern civilization आधुनिक सभ्यता का विशिष्ट लक्षण is an indefinite multiplicity of human wants मनुष्य की आवश्यकताओं में उत्तरोत्तर वृद्धि है।. the characteristic of ancient civilization जब की प्राचीन सभ्यता का गुण is an imperative reaction upon, and a strict regulation of, these wants इन आवश्यकताओं पर रोक लगाना है. The modern or western insatiableness आधुनिक या पश्चिमी असुरक्षा arises really वास्तव में पैदा होती है from want of living faith जीवित विश्वास की इच्छा से in a future state भविष्य की स्थिति में and therefore और इसलिए also in Divinity दिव्यता में भी।. Some of the immediate and brilliant results of modern inventions are too maddening to resist कुछ आधुनिक अविष्कार भी पागल करने वाले हैं. I am not enamoured of that progress मैं उस प्रगति से आसक्त नहीं हूं।. In fact it almost seems वास्तव में, लगभग ऐसा लगता है as though God in his wisdom has prevented India from progressing along those lines जैसे कि भगवान ने अपनी बुद्धि से भारत को उन पंक्तियों के साथ आगे बढ़ने से रोका है, so that it might fulfil its special mission of resisting the onrush of materialism. ताकि वह भौतिकवाद कि ओर दौड़ को रोकने के अपने विशेष मिशन को पूरा कर सके।

After all आखिरकार, there is something in Hinduism हिंदू धर्म में ऐसा कुछ है that kept it alive up till now जिसने इसे अब तक जीवित रखा है। It has witnessed the fall of Babylonian, Syrian, Persian and Egyptian civilizations यह बेबीलोन, सीरिया, फारसी और मिस्र की सभ्यताओं के पतन का गवाह है। Cast a look around you अपने चारों ओर एक नज़र डालें। Where is Rome and where is Greece? रोम कहाँ है और ग्रीस कहाँ है? Go to Greece ग्रीस जाओ। Where is the world-famous attic civilization? विश्व प्रसिद्ध अटारी सभ्यता कहाँ है? Then coming to India फिर भारत आकर, let constrained to say यह कहने के लिए विवश होना चाहिए, ‘yes, I see here ancient India still living”. हां, मैं यहां देख रहा हूं कि प्राचीन भारत अभी भी जीवित है.’

European civilization is, not doubt, suited for the European इसमें कोई शक नहीं है यूरोपीय सभ्यता, यूरोपियों के अनुकूल है, but it will mean लेकिन इसका मतलब ruin for India यह भारत के लिए विनाशकारी होगा if we we endeavour to copy it कि अगर हम सका नकल करने का प्रयास करते हैं तो. A certain degree of physical harmony and comfort is necessary शारीरिक सामंजस्य और आराम की एक निश्चित सीमा आवश्यक है but above a certain level it becomes a hindrance instead of help लेकिन एक निश्चित स्तर से ऊपर यह मदद के बजाय एक बाधा बन जाती है।. Our civilization is still alive while the other civilizations of the world died. Therefore, in Gandhiji’s words if we want our India to rise and shine, we should always value the glory and dignity of our civilization and culture. There is no match for it in this world where a mad rush for materials has deadened the mind of people.

इंडियन सिविलाइजेशन एण्ड कल्चर एक निबंध है जो प्रस्तुत करता है। महात्मा गाँधी के विचारों को भारतीय सभ्यता और सस्कृति के बारे में। वो भारतीय या प्राचीन सभ्यता की तुलना करते है पश्चिमी या आधुनिक सभ्यता से। वो कहते है। कि भारतीय सभ्यता नैतिकता को विकसित करती है जबकि पश्चिमी सभ्यता अनैतिकता को फैलाती है। हमारी सभ्यता दुनिया को पढ़ा सकता है इसलिए हमलोगों को पश्चिमी सभ्यता की नकल करने की आंवश्यकता नहीं है। हमारे पूर्वजों ने हमलोगो को सुझाव दिया मशीनरी के इस्तेमाल से दूर रहने के लिए क्योंकि मशीनरी का इस्तेमाल हमारे हाथों और पावों में लकवा ला सकता है। उनलोगों ने सुझाया इच्छाओं पर प्रतिबन्ध खुश जीवन जीने के लिए। हमारी सभ्यता अभी भी जीवित है जबकि दूसरी सभ्यताएँ दुनिया की नष्ट हो गयी। इसलिए गाँधी जी के शब्दों में अगर हम अपने भारत को ऊँचाई पर चमकना देखना चाहते हैं हमें हमेशा अहमियत देना होगा गौरव और सम्मान को हमारी सभ्यता और संस्कृति के। इसका कोई जोड़ नहीं है इस दुनिया में जहाँ एक पागल दौड़ भौतिकता के लिए लोगों के मस्तिष्क को मृत कर दी है।
